Are you a “progressive” Muslim? Find out…

This note is for those who call themselves “ex Muslims” because they found Islam illogical and faulty. It is also for those “progressive’’ Muslims who claim that Islam has some outdated ideas which need reforming.

Mostly, or almost always, such people reject Islam or part of it because they try to judge the whole Islam based on some tangent, secondary issue. Take the role of genders for instance. Many have rejected Islam simply because they argued why women are given one role and men are given a different one, why is not there equality? And they raise these questions because they judge the morals and ethics of Islam by comparing it to the morals and ethics of the United States. Don’t be shocked, this is the simple truth. If, according to them, Islam agrees with the ethics of the US, it’s all good and if it does not agree, then Islam is definitely backward.

The answer to all such people is: they (the US) claim to have reached the pinnacle of civilization but let’s be honest here, they look down on other civilizations just because of some secondary issue yet they ignore a million other factors. How can they ignore that their society is the most violent society, the most infested with crime, drugs and rape. How can they ignore them and throw them under the table and say just because they are a free society, they love freedom of speech, so they are the best?! How can they claim a moral and a spiritual superiority over people and claim that their lives are more important than that of the third world countries? Moral and ethical views of the US are simply the moral and ethical views that are NOT divine in and of themselves. They could be right and they could be wrong. They are NOT universal and to make generalizations about other moral values and other religions using the morals and values of the US as a universal yardstick is illogical and foolish.

Another point is: before going into tangent issues, subsidiary issues (like that of gender roles, hijab, women leading prayers, etc), look at the theology of Islam. It is unique and free of defects. It clicks to the sound human mind and nothing about it is illogical.

Look at this independent viewpoint:

'I believe in One God and Mohammad, the Apostle (blessings and peace be upon him) of God,' is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honours of the prophet have never transgressed the measure of human virtue, and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion."

Those who think Islam is backward, such words can only come from one who is weak in faith or has no faith at all, is ignorant of history and knows nothing of the means of success and prevailing. How can such compare between the ruling of Allaah and their own reasoning? How can you spurn the way that was followed by the best of mankind and follow a different way that none of the righteous ever followed? How can one take the American or whatever morals as the ultimate, universal, foolproof standard? Where does it say their values are a universal yardstick? Their values change, they are not even stable! What was considered as good in the US more than a decade ago is now considered bad and vice versa. How can you base your life’s ethics on that of a country’s whose ethics change from time to time anyway?!

Remember that the religion of Allaah does not follow the whims and desires of anyone. Allaah is the One Who has created the universe and mankind, and He knows what is best for them in this life and in the Hereafter, so He issues commands and prohibitions for what is best for them in both realms. Be a Muslim. Love Islam as it is as it’s perfect and we are not wiser than Allah. No one can and no one should dare to change Islam or dare to criticize it just because it does not agree with his whims and desires. His whims and desires and opinions are not the universal truth! There is none worthy of worship but Allaah and Muhammad is His Messenger. The reward of Allaah is precious, the reaward of Allaah is Paradise. Already more than a billion-people strong, Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion.
